Learning to drive is a big step. In Toronto, many “instructors” offer cheap lessons on social media and messaging apps. Some of them are not legal. A cheap lesson today can become a very expensive lesson tomorrow.
Before you book anyone, check these 5 signs.
SIGN 1: They cannot prove they are legal
A real driving instructor in Ontario must be licensed, and a real BDE school must be MTO-approved. Ask one simple question: “Are you licensed, and is your school MTO-approved?” A legal instructor answers clearly. An illegal one changes the topic.
SIGN 2: No BDE certificate for you
Only an MTO-approved BDE course puts a certificate on your Driver’s Licence History (DLH). That certificate can make you eligible for an earlier road test and may help with insurance. Lessons with an illegal instructor give you NO certificate — your money brings you nothing on paper.
SIGN 3: The car has no dual brake
A teaching car must have a dual brake, so the instructor can stop the car in an emergency. Look at the passenger side foot area. No dual brake = not a real teaching car = your safety is not protected.
SIGN 4: No school, no name, no trace
A real school has a name, a website, a Google profile, and a history you can check. An illegal instructor often has only a phone number and a first name. If something goes wrong, there is nobody to call.
SIGN 5: Cash pressure and “too cheap” prices
“Pay cash now, no questions, special price only today.” Real schools register you properly, give you clear prices, and explain everything before you pay. Pressure is a warning sign.
HOW TO CHECK IN 2 MINUTES
Ask: “Are you a licensed instructor with an MTO-approved school?”
Ask: “Will my BDE certificate appear on my Driver’s Licence History?”
Ask: “Does your car have a dual brake and teaching insurance?”
Search the school’s name on Google and read real reviews.
If the answers are unclear, walk away. Your licence, your money, and your life are worth more than a cheap lesson.
